Linux Help Rippee S 2006

http://www.hypexr.org/linux_documents.php (Updated: November 04 2009)

Scott Rippee’s website contains various help files for Linux Users. It is not solely on Bash scripting, it covers a wide variety of Linux languages. There is a section on programming, where Rippee provides example codes of C++, Python, Perl. PHP, Javascript and Bash Scripting. Under the ‘GNU Linux’ section, there is a section devoted to ‘A beginner’s Guide to the Bash Shell’. Here, Rippee provides an overview to the Bash Shell. He covers Bash Configuration Files, Modifying the Bash Shell with the set command, Useful Commands and features, aliasing commands, Alerting the command prompt look and information, CDargs- Shell bookmarks, Basic and extended bash completion, and also provides links to useful websites for users who wish to learn more about Bash Scripting. That is the extent of the topics covered on Bash Scripting on this website.

Rippee uses examples from each sub-heading to aid the users understanding of each topic. Throughout the explanation, he provides different websites and books where the reader will be able to learn further on the discussed topic. Each point is explained clearly and concisely with a use of examples, and limited amount of unrelated writing.

The layout of these topics are easy to understand and easily read. The examples are put into text boxes on their own and the colour of the text is slightly lighter than the body. Each topic heading is in larger and bolded font, and certain important keywords are also in bold. The layout is simple but effective, however there are a few downsides.

Rippee fails to include any pictures or labelled diagrams to further aid the understanding of the reader, this can prove problematic as some learners respond better to visual aids which they can memorise and absorb. Furthermore, Rippee only covers basic topics, thus the page being title ‘A Beginners Guide to Bash Scripting.’ That said, Rippee does somehow redeem himself by offering links to pages which teach more advanced Bash Scripting.

Overall this website is particularly effective for beginners looking to gain a short overview of the basics to Bash Scripting. It is also good for users looking to find links to places which teach a specific point, or which teach more advanced Bash Scripting – however for the advanced programmer looking to gain more knowledge – it is best not to use this website.
