Linux Shell Scripting Tutoria Gite V 1999

http://www.freeos.com/guides/lsst (Updated April 24 2002)

Vivek G. Gite’s website is called: Linux Shell Scripting Tutorial v.1.05r3: A Beginner’s Handbook. It is a website solely on Linux Shell (Bash) Scripting. It starts with a quick overview to Linux and then goes on to cover Shell Programming, Shells structuered Lanauge constructs, advance shell scripting commands, essetnail utilities for power users, learnig expressions with ex, awk revisited, examples of shell scripts, and other resources.

Gite manages to cover everything from an introduction to Linux, explaining its origin, creator, and how to install it, to basic Shell programming, such as variables, exit status, echo command, to advanced shell commands such as the trap commands, shift command and the getopts command. The fact that Gite covers beginners and advanced Bash Scripting makes this website a suitable choice for Bash scripters of all level.

The layout, at first, resembles that of a book. The title of each section is shown, with the subtitles underneath. These are all linked to the corresponding pages. The fonts used are consistent, and the size of the font is easily read, perhaps slightly big for smaller screens. The examples are shown in text boxes with a different coloured background – and there are certain keywords which are in bold. Overall, the layout is simple. Perhaps too simple. The background is plan white and there are no pictures on any of the pages – slightly off putting for a visual learner.

The navigation of the website is slightly difficult and hard to adjust to. When clicking on a subtitle – you can only go to the next page, previous page, or home page. No other options. It would have been slightly more organised and beneficial if there was option to all the other pages (or perhaps even the title page for each section.) If we consider books, you are able to access any other page from any page, this should try to be achieved from the website as it makes it easier for users to refer to any part of the resource they want to.

Overall, this website is ideal for any Bash scripter. It is a good starting point for beginners looking to learn all they can about Bash, and it is also good for advanced scripter’s looking to further their knowledge of Bash scripting. It can also be used as a reference for scripter’s to consolidate or refresh their knowledge – however the layout of the website makes it slightly hard to do that.

Pros

Easy to understand

Clear and concise language

Use of examples

Good for beginners

Good for advanced learners

Cons

Slightly plain layout

Lack of pictures and diagrams

Dificult navigation

Our rating:
This website is useful, in content, for beginners and for advanced users. However, the layout and difficult navigation makes it less appealing.

4/5
