Malta Linux User Group, Casha,R. 2001 [Online] (Updated 2008) Available at: http://linux.org.mt/book
The Malta Linux User Group by Casha, R is an online Linux community. It consists of tutorials for beginners, a section for downloads, a forum for users and more, mailing/joining options and more. The site is extremely attractive. Tux, the original Linux logo, has been customised to wearing sunglasses, holding a beach ball and put in front of a glowing and smiling sun. The colour scheme is reds, pinks, and light grey/white. At first site, it is an attractive and appealing website which would draw a user in from the first glimpse. The additional functions make it more than just a Linux learning site. However the Bash side is what we will be focusing on in this review.
There is one section relating to learning Bash, and it is Bash for Beginners. The link to this section is easily accessible and easily identifiable. The tutorial begins with a short introduction to Bash, a section for preparing users, introducing the Bash Shell, simple commands, gaining help, Linux directories, Linux files, wildcards, typing tricks, redirecting output, environment variables, scripts, aliases, switching to root, compiling from source, and a conclusion.
These tutorials are short and to the point. They are not overly saturated with unnecessary waffle; instead they are straight to the important and vital parts. The use of scripting examples aid the user to understand any unclear complexities. One of the most appealing things about this source is that it includes pictures and screenshots – this is a particularly useful feature as some beginners learn more by visual aids.
Overall, this is an excellent resource for an absolute beginner who knows nothing about Bash Scripting. For the advanced user, it is not useful at all, however a total beginner would seriously benefit from reading and absorbing this site.
